Pregnancy is one of the biggest physical challenges, and overall changes, you may experience in your lifetime. Your body can suddenly start feeling unfamiliar and unpredictable…and at least once, you’ll probably find yourself asking your doctor about something you’d never even realized was a thing. (Nipples changing color? Colostrum leaking out before you give birth? Skin tags popping up out of nowhere? The list goes on.) While there’s a whole industry out there devoted to selling you pregnancy “must-haves” you don’t actually need, there are also a couple key products that can truly make your pregnancy and postpartum recovery a lot more comfortable. Here are some of our all-time favorites.
Feeling Your Best

Favorite Prenatal Vitamin: NatureMade Prenatal with Folic Acid + DHA
This vitamin is easy to find. (We’ve bought it over the years at CVS, Target, and our local supermarkets.) Plus, at around 18 cents per pill, it’s hard to beat the price. This formula includes important nutrients like folic acid and DHA; if you’d like a version with added choline, you can opt for this daily softgel-and-capsule combo from the same brand. Of course, if you have any questions, consult your doctor.

Favorite Baby Prep Book: Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy
With so many pregnancy books, apps, and courses to choose from, it’s important to prioritize those that offer high-quality information without ratcheting up your anxiety. This accessible book goes week by week, outlining what may be going on with your baby, body, emotions, and even prenatal appointments. It’s a practical volume we’ve found reassuring to consult over the course of multiple pregnancies, and a great starting point for any pregnancy bookshelf.

Favorite Pregnancy Pillow: Leachco Back 'N Belly® Slumber Wonder Contoured Total Body Pregnancy Pillow
Somewhere between the end of the first trimester and beginning of the third, you may start to wonder if you’ll ever sleep comfortably again. And while a big cozy pillow like this can’t instantly eliminate your sleep problems, it can certainly do its best to try. We appreciate the shape of this particular pillow because it’s easy to use if you’re tossing and turning at night (no need to flip or readjust anything if you want to switch from your right to your left side). We love that the cover is washable, too.

Favorite Support Wear: Belly Bandit 2-in-1 Hip Bandit
While the specific support band you choose will depend on where exactly you’re feeling pregnancy pain, we like this Belly Bandit wrap for lower back and hip support. It’s easy to use with light and “ultra” support options, and comes in two sizes, XS-M and L-XL. Wear it either on top of your clothes or underneath a shirt or sweater; it’s unassuming enough that no one needs to know you’re getting a little extra under-belly help.

Favorite Exercise Ball: Gaiam Total Body Exercise Balance Stability Yoga Ball
Nothing fancy, but this exercise ball is great to have around the house as you prepare to give birth, and even in the early days with your new baby. Gentle movements on the ball can help ease everyday discomfort in late pregnancy, and when your little one arrives, some easy bouncing with you on the ball may soothe extra fussiness.
Clothing & Accessories

Favorite Overalls: Smash + Tess Romperalls
These aren’t technically maternity wear, but they’re so soft and stretchy that we’ve kept them in our wardrobe rotation well into later months of pregnancy. Since they’re not designed with extra space for a growing belly, we’ve actually found them to be more flattering than some super-baggy pregnancy-specific overalls. You’ll appreciate them during your postpartum weeks, too; the straps are super easy to pull down for nursing, and the lack of a waistband makes them ideal for lounging around when you’re still figuring out which pant size will actually fit.

Favorite Pajamas: Gap Maternity Modal Nursing PJ Dress
These soft, cozy nightgowns work while you’re still pregnant, postpartum, and long afterward. With a built-in bra offering light support and clip-down tabs for nursing, they’re great to pack in your hospital bag or wear daily after you get home.

Favorite Slip-On Shoes: Birkenstocks
Birkenstocks will probably always be our favorite summer pregnancy shoe because their combo of support, breathing room, and adjustability is pretty hard to beat. Since you can easily adjust the length of each strap, swollen feet or ankles shouldn’t cause a fit problem. If you’re giving birth in the warmer months, you’ll love slipping into these for your first family walks around the neighborhood, too. Bringing a less-expensive EVA pair to the hospital for your first few days of recovery isn’t a bad idea, since they’re waterproof and can even be worn in the shower.

Favorite Undershort: Thigh Society The Cooling Short
We sing the praises of these lightweight undershorts all the time, but a summer pregnancy is where they truly shine. They’re like just the top portion of your lightest pair of tights, but with no compression whatsoever, so they’re perfect for preventing thigh chafe without any added discomfort. They’re so stretchy that they should work for you before, during, and after your pregnancy (although sizing up is never a bad idea), and they’ll make you actually look forward to wearing dresses on those long, sticky, seemingly endless summer pregnancy days.

Favorite Dress: Old Navy Maternity
If you don’t want to spend a ton of money on maternity-specific outfits (we get it), Old Navy is your new best friend. Their maternity basics, like these simple dresses, are everything you need them to be: practical, affordable, flattering enough to keep you feeling human, and durable enough to last through some pretty intense outfit repetition.
Postpartum Recovery

Favorite Protein Powder: Perelel Health Triple-Support Protein
It’s easy to let your own nutrition go by the wayside when every waking moment is devoted to the nutrition of a small and essentially helpless being. That said, forgetting to nourish yourself is a big mistake. This doctor- and nutritionist-formulated protein powder with creatine can help you meet your protein and fiber goals. It’s a winner of the Clean Label Project Purity Award and has a creamy vanilla flavor (but no added sugar). New customers can use code SKIMM20 for 20% off a subscription or one-time purchase between September 15 and October 17. (There’s no minimum purchase requirement, but this deal is limited to one recurring payment, and can’t be combined with other discounts).

Favorite Nipple Butter: Earth Mama Organic Nipple Butter
If you’re struggling with nipple discomfort in those first few weeks of breastfeeding, you’ll probably reach a point where you’d do just about anything for some relief. And while we also swear by this lanolin nipple cream, Earth Mama Organic Nipple Butter is a great option if you’d prefer a lanolin-free formula. Made with olive oil, beeswax, cocoa seed butter, shea butter, mango seed butter, and calendula, it’s a perfect all-around moisturizer, and just like the lanolin cream, doesn’t need to be wiped off before nursing.

Favorite Post-Nursing Recovery Item: SILVERETTE® The Original Silver Nursing Cups
Made in Italy from nickel-free silver, these are the little shields your poor nipples deserve if you’re struggling with ongoing breastfeeding pain. With two sizes available, they’re easy to slip on under any bra or shirt, so you don’t have to contend with chafing-related discomfort. For even more relief, choose the version that has a silicone ring around the base. At $60+ for a pair, they’re an investment, but they have no expiration date, so you can use them across multiple pregnancies.

Favorite Pads: Rael Pads for Women, Organic Cotton Cover
Chances are you’ll head home from the hospital with at least one big pack of extra pads. But when it’s time to restock, Rael is our brand of choice. These pads are chlorine- fragrance-, and pesticide-free with a cover made from organic cotton. Our editors rave about them for being gentle on healing skin, plus they come in sizes ranging from petite to XL Overnight.

Favorite Nursing Bra: Kindred Bravely Sublime Seamless Nursing Bra
For a practical everyday nursing bra that provides good support while still being comfortable, we’re fans of Kindred Bravely. We especially like the wide range of sizes available; choose from sizes small through 3X, with “regular,” “busty,” or “super busty” fit types (meaning sizes effectively fit everyone wearing a B through K cup). For the same comfy and practical bra with an added panel for pumping, shop this version.

Favorite Comfortable Recovery Bra: Hatch The Skin To Skin Bra
If you’re looking for a bra with great support, this isn’t it. But if you’re suffering from any number of common pregnancy or postpartum boob ailments (like sore nipples, or an itchy heat-related rash) you’ll want this in your underwear drawer. Made from 91-94% pima cotton (depending on the color), it’s incredibly light, soft, and breathable, and we speak from experience when we say there have been days when it was the only piece of material we felt comfortable putting on our super-sensitive skin.

Favorite Postpartum Kit: Frida Mom Postpartum Recovery Essentials Kit with Peri Bottle
Buy this set for yourself, or send it to a friend who just gave birth — chances are that you or the lucky recipient will end up restocking on at least one of the included products. This set of tried-and-true Frida Mom favorites includes an upside-down peri bottle that’s super beginner-friendly, cooling pad liners with witch hazel, disposable underwear (like the version you get at the hospital, but less prone to tearing), perineal healing foam, and instant ice maxi pads (just bend to activate, no need to freeze your own “padsicles”). For a set more specifically targeted to moms who had a C-section, try this version.
