Everyone is talking about romanticizing fall, and for us, that means dressing like a feisty aspiring novelist circa 1868. Jo March is our forever icon, from her cozy-yet-practical style to her can-do attitude, and we’re emulating both. We’ve found sweaters, skirts, and outerwear for a modern take we’re sure Jo herself would love. (And if you haven’t read Little Women yet, this is your sign.)

rollneck-sweater
J.Crew

A rollneck sweater that went viral…

This sweater recently blew up on TikTok, and for good reason — it’s the revamp of one of J.Crew’s most beloved styles. While Jo certainly wouldn’t care that it’s trending, she would love the high neck, that it’s made with thick cotton, and it has a slouchy yet still polished fit. ($98+, J.Crew)

silk-skirt
Reformation

A silk skirt you can dress up or down…

One editor has this skirt, and can confirm it’s worth the hype. It’s slinkier than Jo would have worn, but the delicate lace at the bottom gives it a Victorian feel. Wear it with a sweater and tall boots for a chic covered-up look. ($218, Reformation)

clog
DSW

A Dr. Martens clog for trekking through the fields…

A sure bet is that Jo March would have loved the practicality of Dr. Martens. These are no exception, from their classic rugged outsole to the durable suede upper. The easy-on Velcro back strap will keep them secure if you’re trying to hasten away from someone’s love confession. ($139.99, DSW)

rugby-sweater
Lands' End

A rugby sweater to lean into the preppy aesthetic…

You can’t throw a stone without hitting a rugby shirt these days. This one stands out, since it’s made of a textural knit and comes in bright striped options. It’s boxy so you can wear a shirt underneath, but it doesn’t look sloppy. Reviewers say it runs large, so you might want to size down. ($89.95, Lands’ End)

Buy it
silk-scarf
Madewell

A bright silk bandana…

Jo’s signature is a red patterned scarf worn around her neck, and we say not enough people are wearing silk scarves. You can tie it around your neck with the knot in the front or the back, you can wear it in your hair, or you can tie it on your bag. Take a little bit of Jo’s gumption with you. ($68, Madewell)

Buy it
tie-shirt
Anthropologie

A button-down shirt with a built-in tie…

One thing Jo could do was pull off a tie, and so can you. This shirt makes it easy, since the tie is included to perfectly match the shirt. You can wear it without the tie, too, since the ruffle collar can stand on its own. The striped version is too good to pass up. ($118, Anthropologie)

Buy it
blazer
Tuckernuck

An investment blazer you’ll wear for years…

This tweed blazer comes in a dark green that both acts as a neutral and sets it apart from other run-of-the-mill jackets. It has an oversized menswear fit that pairs nicely with everything from dresses to trousers. ($328, Tuckernuck)

Buy it
midi-skirt
Free People

A midi skirt to show a little leg…

If Jo was going to abandon the large hoop skirts she normally wears to expose a little skin, this is the skirt she would go for. It’s pleated with an A-line shape, and it strikes the perfect balance between a menswear-inspired and feminine look. ($128, Free People)

Buy it
scarf-coat
Quince

A wool coat with a built-in scarf…

With this coat and scarf combo, you can achieve a bundled up look without all the extra layers. It’s made of 100% merino wool so it’ll actually keep you warm. Sweep your hair up into a bun with a hair pin, like Jo did with most of her outerwear outfits. ($200, Quince)

Buy it
boots
Nordstrom

Knee-high boots that look more expensive than they are…

These are the knee-high boots we would put Jo in if we styled her. The heel is an easy-to-wear 2 inches, the pointed toe is timeless, and they’re affordable. Any of the three colors would complement your fall wardrobe. ($99.95, Nordstrom)

Buy it
corduroys
Old Navy

A pair of pants that aren’t jeans…

Jo doesn’t often wear pants, but we think she’d love these high-waisted corduroys. They have a straight leg and come in an earthy brown. Pair them with a ruffle top like she would. ($32.99, Old Navy)

Buy it
mary-janes
Nordstrom

A Mary Jane you can walk in for miles…

These flats have supportive cushioning, so whether you’re running errands or to the local newspaper to get them to publish your story, they’ll be comfortable. They’re incredibly versatile; you can pair them with dresses, jeans, you name it. ($195, Nordstrom)

Buy it
ruffle-socks
Free People

A pack of ruffle socks…

Jo was not afraid of a ruffle. Wear these socks with the Mary Janes above, loafers, and even your favorite sneakers. They add a playful touch to any outfit. ($30, Free People)

Buy it
shirt-dress
Abercrombie & Fitch

A shirt dress that’ll keep you cozy…

Between the flannel fabric and the plaid print, it doesn’t get more fall than this. It’ll keep you warm if you’re apple picking or pumpkin patch hopping, and it has a removable belt so you can wear it both ways. ($70, Abercrombie & Fitch)

Buy it
blouse
J.Crew

A pintuck blouse that spans seasons…

This blouse will become your new wardrobe workhorse, with its lace trim and ruffle detailing. The fabric is light and airy on the skin, making it perfect for layering in the fall or wearing on its own in the summer. ($132.99, J.Crew)

Buy it
suede-jacket
Anthropologie

A two-in-one faux suede jacket…

This jacket screams Jo March, from the deep brown hue to the removable quilted vest underneath. It has a bomber silhouette that goes with anything and arm patches for a nice added detail. Wear the vest on its own over a white button-up for a Laurie-inspired outfit Jo would appreciate (we’ll never get over them). ($198, Anthropologie)
