Geri Halliwell-Horner, aka Ginger Spice, practically invented girl power and forever holds a special place in our millennial hearts. In her twenties, she answered a magazine ad and ended up making pop history with the Spice Girls. In her thirties, she felt the pressures of “time lines” and adult-life creeping in. Welcome to the club. Listen as Geri shares how girl power carried her through her post-Spice Girls career.
In this episode of 9 to 5ish, Geri shares:
On Ignoring the Pressure of Timelines in Your 30s
Geri: I would say my thirties was almost like a late puberty. I suddenly went, ‘Oh my god, I've got to be a grownup.’ And that's when I started comparing. Like, oh those two over there, they're getting married. Those people over there, they've got a perfect relationship. I always say this to anybody – everyone on their own time, your own time. Take that pressure off.
On Bringing Girl Power to All of Her Projects
Geri: I've always tried to hide vegetables and chocolate. The truth is nobody will remember what you really say. I'll be very surprised if anyone listening will remember a word I said today. But we remember how we made each other feel. Whatever it is, you can infuse it with something of love, importance, empowerment, and I've always had that sense. Consequently, Rosie Frost – she's got that for you in the first book…in the first book, there are four rules that Rosie Frost gets given to by the ghost of Anne Boleyn. There are four rules, and I've always lived by those rules and those rules. The first one is to have courage. Second one is united we stand. Never give up and be of service, that’s the third one and fourth one is be yourself. Those are principles that I have lived by throughout my life.
