Sally Rooney’s latest novel came out two days ago, and all of its lead-up hype has me overthinking this Esquire piece on books as status symbols. While it may be cool to get early access to a book, I still believe there’s nothing quite like the feeling of patiently waiting at your local bookstore to grab a fresh copy. The brothers are managing their grief after the death of their father — and in typical Rooney fashion, fall into complicated relationships with each other, themselves, and a few women along the way. If you’re a Rooney loyalist or prefer character-driven novels in which plot takes a back seat, pick this one up.
