petite clothing

Margo, editor of Skimm Your Life, here. I recently chatted with Madeleine Cohen, founder of petite denim brand Nelle Atelier, to get help on how to shop for items that fit my 5’1” body. See below for her thoughts and some of my go-to’s for those who need shorter inseams.

What are the most important things to consider and look out for when shopping for petites?

When shopping for bottoms, the most important thing to know is your inseam. Every body has different proportions, and knowing your inseam will better help you navigate a brand's offering — especially if you are shopping online. Petite inseams generally range from 25 inches (ankle length) to 30 inches (floor length, usually a style that is intended to wear with heels).

Are there any hacky ways a shorter individual can “cheat” the system when shopping at brands that don’t have a petite section?

When shopping as a shorter woman, the most important thing to consider is proportion. I always look for cropped garments when it comes to jackets and tops, as I know they will hit me in the right places. I also tend to gravitate towards high-waisted bottoms as they elongate the leg.

I sometimes tend to cut the hems off my own jeans. Any tips on making things fit at home, without having to go to the tailor?

how to get started

Lion Brand

This year, we’re itching to change up the usual activities we have on rotation. So we’re taking you with us as we explore new hobbies. Next up, we’re finally learning how to knit and crochet.

How to do it:

  • Use a guide — whether you prefer to use a reference book, or you’re a visual learner and turn to videos. You can also check for local yarn or craft shops in your area to sign up for classes.

  • Pick a beginner-level project and buy your materials. We love this yarn for beginners.

What to buy:

  • Lion Brand’s premade kits. You can select one based on your level (we’re beginners, obviously) and it’ll come with all the materials you need — along with a downloadable pattern. We’re particularly into this one for making your own bath mat.

  • Plus, their mini packs of yarn. It’s a great way to try out different weights and colors before committing to a larger skein.
