How to Set a $$$ Resolution You Can Actually Keep

New year, delulu money goals? There’s something about a fresh start that just inspires you to think big about your money. (And we love to see it.) But the key to setting a $$$ resolution you won’t ditch by February? Skip the wishful thinking, and set some concrete and achievable (read: realistic) goals. Whether you want to pay off your student loan debt, fund your dream vacay, or buy a home, here's how to make sure you and your 2024 money goals get a Hallmark movie happy ending.

Your move:

  • Think about your why. Example: Saving money is a popular resolution. To make it stick, think about why you want to save money. Do you want to feel more secure, less stressed, or have more flexibility? Write it down, create a vision board (more on this in 5-Minute Money Tip below), and make it real.

  • Start small. You’re never going to eat out again, right? Wrong. Make changes to your spending habits that are aligned with your lifestyle. Think: Only ordering takeout once a week, and then putting that extra $100 you’d normally spend on Grubhub into your high-yield savings account instead.

  • Change your IG feed. Because, spoiler alert, scrolling through social media can lead to overspending. Mute any accounts that tempt you to take out your credit card (you know the ones). Also, consider following accounts that give smart, money-saving tips so you can stay informed and motivated.

Can the market’s momentum last through the final week of trading before the Christmas holiday break? We’ll have to wait until the closing bell on Friday to find out.

5-minute money tip

One act of financial self-care you can do in five minutes.

Build a financial vision board.

If you see it, you can save it. So make your goal concrete. First, write it down. Think: I will pay off my $7,000 credit card balance, or I will save up to take a trip to Italy this summer. Then, gather pictures and inspirational quotes to make a vision board. Go digital with Canva or Pinterest or old-school with a poster board and magazine cutouts. Pro tip: Put it somewhere you can see — by your desk or as your laptop wallpaper — to stay motivated.
