A forward for the Houston Dash, Messiah Bright has been stunning women’s soccer fans with her speed, poise, and power on the field –– all over the US. In her two years as a pro, she’s played for three teams starting with the Orlando Pride, then in Los Angeles for the Angel City FC, and now she’s returned to her home state to play for the Houston Dash.
We caught up with Bright on embracing a fresh start with her home team, giving herself grace, and the importance of speaking up.
Lose the Ego
“Sometimes it can be uncomfortable watching yourself back [on film] on what you may have thought was considered a ‘poor’ performance because you are your biggest critic, but I am always looking to grow and continuously improve.”
Speak Up
“My advice to women is to not let anyone dim your light. Women already have to work 10x harder, so sometimes speaking up may be uncomfortable, you may be someone who doesn’t like confrontation, but sometimes that one moment that you do have may change the trajectory of everything.”
Focus On What You’ve Learned
“I have been fortunate enough to have been a part of some really good organizations (Orlando & LA), now starting my 3rd year in the league and being in Houston. Each experience has taught me something valuable, like the importance of leadership, culture and navigating dynamics with different people.”
Give Yourself Grace
“[Don’t] get discouraged when you feel like you’re struggling to get somewhere. Keep working when things get tough and to find love in what you’re passionate about. And give yourself grace! I too still struggle with trying to give myself grace, but I make sure to practice it everyday.”
